MILITARY GROUND AMMUNITION PRODUCTION FACILITY – BAIANO DI SPOLETO

The Military Ground Ammunition Production Facility of Baiano di Spoleto originated from a local detached unit established in 1937 as part of the Projectile Loading Laboratory of Piacenza.

This decentralisation was prompted by the need of the Italian Armed Forces to establish an additional industrial unit capable of supporting the growing volume of military orders during a period marked by increasing national military preparedness. At the same time, the central geographical position of the site provided greater protection from potential enemy incursions and ensured balanced accessibility from all parts of the country and the corresponding stationed units.

During the Second World War, the Umbrian facility was heavily engaged, leading to the expansion of its plants and production lines. Until 8 August 1940, it remained under the authority of the Piacenza facility, after which it became a dependent section of the Noceto (Parma) Establishment and subsequently an autonomous section.

The Armistice of 8 September 1943 brought this phase of production growth to an end and, as with other similar facilities under German occupation, resulted in the suspension of industrial activities and the dispersal of the workforce.

Nevertheless, during the period of the Italian Social Republic, the Laboratory was reopened and operated with approximately one hundred workers. However, due to continuous Allied bombing and the demolition charges set off by retreating German troops, the Laboratory was largely destroyed during 1944.

After the war, like other similar facilities, the Baiano di Spoleto plant was reconstructed, providing renewed impetus to the modernisation of its infrastructure and production capabilities.

This relaunch led, in the 1970s, to the experimental-scale production of T4 explosive, with a view to expanding both the qualitative and quantitative capacity of the installations.

The high level of specialisation achieved in this field led in 1977 to its redesignation as a Detached Section of the Military Ground Ammunition Establishment – Propellant Division.

From the late 1990s onward, following the restructuring of the Defence technical-industrial sector, the Facility embarked on a path aimed at opening to the external market, gradually assuming a broader role beyond its traditional institutional functions.

It therefore specialised in all activities related to the assembly, efficiency testing, reconditioning and disposal of explosive ordnance. These activities include the assembly and conversion of cartridges and shells, as well as the demilitarisation of fuzes, detonators and explosive components through controlled furnace processes and the destruction of pressure-activated mines.

The production unit also initiated activities for the refurbishment of artillery shells, management of efficiency testing of explosive ordnance of various calibres, and the manufacture of ballistic vests for the Italian Armed Forces.

With its transfer under the direct authority of the Defence Industries Agency in 2002, the Facility set the objective of achieving sound and sustainable economic management. The experience accumulated over the years and the certified quality of its products subsequently enabled the Facility to establish partnerships with leading commercial operators in the sector.
